Frequently Asked
Will a coach tell me what I should do?
Coaches don’t usually direct you into an answer, they help you by supporting your thinking process. However, they will give information occasionally or provide tools to help. They will sometimes ask permission to give you feedback.
Is it face to face, online or over the phone and how long is a typical session?
It could be either depending on what suits you. As long as you are in a safe space where you can think clearly it will work well. A typical session is an hour long and has the option of a follow up call.
How do I know if I’m making progress?
At the start of your coaching journey, you will work out a goal and decide the evidence you would like to see. In each session you will review progress with the coach, and during the last session there will be an overall review of how far you have moved and the next steps you could take.
What’s the difference between coaching and counselling?
While coaching and counselling have things in common, they are also different. Coaching focusses on the practical changes you want to make, how you are going to achieve that and will only look at a root cause as far as it affects your ability to succeed. In counselling the interest is much more about the person’s life story and how their difficulties developed.
How will I know it’s right for me and what is the consultation call?
There is a free half-hour consultation with the coach before you start to check if coaching is the right ‘fit’ for you. The coach will explain how the process works, ask about the problems you would like help with, and give you a chance to ask questions of them. If it goes well, you both agree to a programme or a one-off as a follow-up. But generally speaking, if you are ready for change, open to having structure, up for a challenge and ready to take responsibility; if you are prepared to do ‘take home’ tasks and want to be held to accountable – you are ready!
