I’ve been thinking about fun things to do- I like to call it ‘Stupid stuff.’ I need stupid stuff. I used to love stupid stuff. What happened?
I blame my forties- life got wrinkly and serrrrious. A lot of the difficulties I’d been through for over a decade needed looking at.
When I was a tiny kid I was always doing ‘Stupid Stuff.’ Chasing the dog, making up poo poo poems, pulling funny faces, on my back and smacking my bum bum, trying on my sisters’ dresses, singing…
When I was a teenager ‘Stupid Stuff’ was snogging, making fun of teachers, writing silly stories, making up stupid games, munching garlic bread, glugging cheap red wine until my head spun, dressing up as ‘Rocky Horror.’
And then… my twenties I began to have ree-lay-shun-ships– some fun, but they always needed tending to. I started a career, which was exciting, but came at an immense cost in terms of anxiety. I was clubbing, DJ’ing, travelling, partying, writing songs and recording demos.
During my thirties the twin responsibilities of career and relationship took over. The urge to settle overtook the need for experimentation. The health twinges from my twenties took on more serious implications and lots of doors seemed to close. Also, the price tag from some of the more extreme experiences of my twenties needed accounting for.
And then the big ‘Four- Oh (No!)’.
So Here I am. I accept my mortality; it’s a bit like being a reduced item in Sainsbury’s. Life needs to be enjoyed RIGHT NOW. I accept the need to plan- pension and mortgage and the hope (if ever) of retirement. But I have to make some meaning out of what is left of time on this blessed earth.
And I realllly want to do some ‘Stupid Stuff.’ In my last coaching session with Hazel Gowing, my take-home task was to find some things to do. So, I am on the hunt for ideas a fifty-year-old guy operating under the rules of fibro might take on.
I am very much open to suggestions…
Anyone?
